What is your perception of God? If you were asked to describe God from what you know about Him, who would you say He is?  In Church, when I hear how other Christians praise and honour God in prayer I would wish I could pray as they do. I never thought of how they came up with those beautiful attributes of God; all I wanted was to be like them. Little did I know that the way you know God determines how you relate to him. While I desired to address God in a powerful way in prayers, my perception of Him was different. I knew him to be powerful but not as loving as the Bible portrays Him to be; instead, I saw him as a very strict father who keeps track of the failures of his children so He could punish them.

What a wrong perception of God you might think, right? How do you see Him from your own perspective? He is a loving and merciful Father who is always willing to deliver than to punish, isn’t it? Yeah; that is what the Bible says He is. I congratulate you if you know Him that way and you believe in Him, but for me, that wasn’t the case. Why didn’t I believe God loves as He claims to be? I prayed for help and He did not act swiftly, I wanted him to make me greater than those that don’t believe in him and he didn’t. Instead, I saw that the very people who didn’t care about him were the ones progressing than me.

Our doubts are raised by the challenges of life.

I discovered that I was not the only one who had such perception of God, the Psalmist and Job had a similar feeling at a point in time.

These were their expressions:

Job said,

I cry out to you, but you do not answer me; I stand up, and you regard me. But you have become cruel to me; with the strength of your hand, you oppose me. You lift me up to the wind and cause me to ride on it; You spoil my success. For I know that you will bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living
. Job 30:20-23.

For God made my heart weak, and the Almighty terrifies me; because I was not cut off from the presence of darkness,  and He did not hide deep darkness from my face. Since times are not hidden from the Almighty, why do those who know Him see not good days?
Job 23:16-17, 24:1.

The Psalmist also said,

And they say, how does God know? And is there knowledge in the most high? Behold these are the ungodly, who are always at ease; They increase in riches. Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain, and wash my hands in innocence. For all day long I have been plagued and chastened every morning.
Psalm 73:13-14

Have you ever found yourself in a situation that made you have similar feelings? Perhaps at the moment, you are experiencing hard times in your marriage, ill health or financial challenges and you have been praying, but everywhere is quiet. While you are expecting immediate help from God, your problems are rather multiplying. Does God appear to be the same God you trusted in? Can you still trust and lean on him even in difficult moments? When faced with difficult situations God seems to be out of our reach, all we see and feel is pain and rejection.

 God’s delay is not denial

The good news is, God is not limited by the way we perceive him, and our perception does not change him from being who He is. When I thought I was waiting in vain and was almost giving up, his mercies showed up and engulfed me. He delivered me and filled my heart with joy I had never experienced in my life before. I now know that he is not eager to punish his earring children rather, eager to forgive, deliver and bless them.

This is what He says about Himself:

The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin”
Exodus 34:6

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire you shall not be burned. Nor shall the flame scorch you.
” Isaiah 43:2

Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you.
Isaiah 49:15

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy, He will not always strive with us, nor will he keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punishes us according to our iniquities. As the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him”
Psalm 103:8-13.

“But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us”
. Romans 5:8

But God who is rich in mercy; because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)”
Ephesians 2:4-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”
1 Cor.1:2-4.

,

”Because he has set his love upon, I will deliver him; I will set him on high because he has known my name. When he shall call on me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honour him; with long life, I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.
”.Psalm 91:14-16

We are confronted by the schemes of the devil

Do you know what? We have an enemy who always condemns us; he makes us feel miserable and doubt God’s love. He has stood against other people of God and we are no exceptions. He is very crafty and uses the word of God in a deceitful way to achieve his goal. This enemy is the devil who is called Satan.

He asked Eve,

Did God actually say you shall not eat of any tree in the garden?”
Gen.3:1b

He incited King David to number the Israelites contrary to the Will of God. The scripture says, “Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel”. 1 Chron.21:1,7

He took our Lord to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him,

If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you
” Mat.4:5-6a.

He incited Peter to rebuke Jesus when Jesus predicted his death to them because he wanted to disrupt the work of our salvation. Mark 8:31

Our Lord said, lies are the native language of Satan and he is the father of lies. John.8: 44.

He disguises himself as an angel of light, and he is the accuser of the brethren. When in difficulties he tries to brainwash us into believing that God has forgotten about us. But we know that God’s word is sure and there is no lie in it. I have tested it and I can testify about it.

Tribulations are opportunities for God’s blessing

So we know that,

all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. He who did not spare his own son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or famine, or nakedness, or peril or sword? Yes, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Romans 8:28,32-35 &37.
